Five-time Champions League winners, Liverpool FC, play their home games at Anfield, around two miles north of the city, and just half a mile separates Liverpool’s ground from Goodison Park, home of rivals Everton FC.
In the 10 years since Liverpool’s crowning as European Capital of Culture, it has seen huge regeneration – nowhere more so than down at the red-pillared Docks area, where you’ll find some of the city’s trendiest waterside restaurants side-by-side with historic pubs like the Grade II-listed The Pumphouse. The gateway to the docks is the iconic Royal Liver Building – once the tallest building in Europe, with two liver birds that stand on top of the clock towers looking out over the city and the sea. The Royal Albert Dock makes up part of the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to The Beatles Story, the Tate Liverpool and the Merseyside Maritime Museum.
Food and drink is a big deal in Liverpool. There’s an eclectic choice of pubs, clubs and bars, from working men’s clubs and old haunts like the famous The Cavern Club (sure, it’s touristy, but going to a live music night is a must for any Beatles fan) to swanky new speakeasies in converted warehouses. If the sun’s shining, one of the most popular places for a Pimm’s is a colonial-inspired beach club that feels like it was plucked straight from Antigua. And at the Philharmonic Dining Rooms, the architecture is so grand that the gents’ toilets are Grade-I listed.
For food, The Docks is a sure bet for Asian-fusion and teppanyaki, and there are excellent Italian and Indian restaurants all over the city. Brunch on Bold Street is a much-loved weekend treat and its vintage shops also make for great post-food browsing. To go back to the city’s roots, try ‘scouse’: a fish-and-biscuit stew that was popular with sailors.
Shopping is a favourite Liverpudlian pastime and hitting the shops on a Saturday before a big night out is almost tradition. Liverpool One is the city’s newest and glossiest shopping centre, with premium shops like Guess and Reiss. The Everton football shop here has one of smartest shops names in history. In a cheeky nod to the local rivalry, it’s called Everton Two, making its address: Everton Two, Liverpool One. The boutique Cavern Walks is another high-end shopping haunt and Cricket is the retail spot of choice for many local celebs. For a vintage and altogether more laid-back shopping experience, head to Lark Lane on the outskirts of the city.
Of course you don’t have to shop your way around. Liverpool is a very walkable city and the great architecture here means that there are lots of scenic walks. Many of the landmark buildings are dotted around the cobbled streets of the Georgian Quarter. Two cathedrals bookend Hope Street and they couldn’t be more different in design. The traditional Anglican Cathedral is a superb example of Gothic architecture and offers far-reaching views across the city from the top of its tower, while The Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King is affectionately known as ‘Paddy’s Wigwam’ thanks to its distinctive shape.
Just up the road from the cathedrals lies Liverpool University’s beautiful Victoria Building – one of the first ‘red brick’ buildings in the UK – and the art-deco-style and Grade II-listed Royal Philharmonic, home to the award-winning Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. In this area you’ll also find the hub of Liverpool’s performing arts scene. Since its opening in 1964, The Everyman Theatre has helped launch the careers of actors such as Julie Walters, Bill Nighy and Pete Postlethwaite. Its statelier sister, the Liverpool Playhouse, has also seen some big names tread the boards on their route to the top, including Richard Burton and Anthony Hopkins.
The Georgian Quarter is also where you’ll find one of Liverpool’s best places to stay. Many of the larger hotels in the city centre have seen their best days, but Liverpool comes into its own with its smattering of modern boutique hotels. Hope Street Hotel remains one of the best options for a stylish and central stay, with its Scandi-style rooms and top restaurant.
