CITY GUIDE HOBART

Private jet charter and flights to Hobart

The harbour town of Hobart was founded in 1804 as a penal colony at the eastern foot of Mount Wellington. Hobart may be the country’s smallest state capital but it’s also one of its most diverse, with a fascinating convict history, strong dining scene, new-age art and easy access to Tasmania’s unspoilt national parks. There’s no better time to visit – the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), which opened in 2011, has added a cosmopolitan edge to the city. One of Australia’s most important convict sites can be found just south of Hobart’s city centre at the Penitentiary, which has seen more than 50,000 convicts pass through its complex. It later became Hobart’s Old Gaol and Supreme Court and today the underground tunnels, solitary cells and gallows can be explored on a guided tour. Another historic highlight is the Battery Point Historic Walk, which showcases one of the city’s oldest suburbs with its winding narrow streets, old seafarers cottages, colonial architecture and historic sites such as Kelly’s Steps, Arthur Circus and the Narryna Heritage Museum.

However, it’s not all about history in Hobart. Its main waterfront is Constitution Dock, a buzzing area lined with fresh seafood stalls, traditional laid-back pubs and cool craft beer bars. Wander along the beautiful working waterfront past the old warehouses to Salamanca Place, where the open-air Salamanca Market takes place on Saturdays.

And then there’s the art. MONA – located on the Moorilla Estate Winery and reached by a 30-minute ferry ride up the river from Brooke Street Pier – is a bold and provocative privately-funded museum. It’s the antithesis of a stuffy gallery; here you’re encouraged to eat cheese, drink beer and chat away before heading underground to discover a collection of over 300 thought-provoking works of art.

The fresh new art museum has influenced the rest of the city, too. A thriving food and drink scene has emerged, which has seen some of Hobart’s restaurants ranked up there with the best in Australia. Whisky bars and craft beer are both big news here, too, with some top distilleries and breweries open for tours and tastings.

Accommodation here doesn’t disappoint, either. Hobart has some top luxury hotels, many housed in historic buildings. On the waterfront, The Henry Jones Art Hotel is named after one of Tasmania’s biggest employers, while the glitzy new MACq 01 bills itself as a ‘storytelling hotel’. For a boutique option, The Islington Hotel is a hip property housed in a Regency house with views of Mount Wellington.
