CITY GUIDE ESSAOUIRA

Private jet charter to Essaouira

Essaouira is a relaxed, beachy side to Morocco, one that benefits from the beautiful sunshine that bathes the entire country, but blessed with a sea breeze that allows you to explore throughout the entire day. Get a fast quote from Air Charter Service to charter flights to Essaouira.

If you’re in Essaouira you’ll have to head to the beach, but not to sunbathe. Instead you’ll be either enjoying one of the multitudes of beach activities on offer such as horse rides, camel rides or quad biking, or taking to the waves kite-surfing or wind-surfing. You must also take a wander along the harbour, time it right and you’ll be able to see the fishermen bringing in their catch. If you head along towards the medina you can also sample some of it, cooked before your eyes, at the selection of small seafront cafes.

Like Marrakech, Essaouira is also blessed with a vibrant souk, though this one is far calmer and offers an approach to bartering that’s a little more relaxed and easier for a first-timer to experience. Here, within the medina, you’ll find a maze of alleys filled with people going about their daily business. Donkeys, mopeds and carts will appear amongst the throngs of people as people step out of the way to let them pass, before immediately continuing on their way. The range of goods is immense, with everything from beautifully painted tagines, to colourful dresses, quirky jewellery and wonderful carved items. You’ll also find the ubiquitous rugs and throws as well as plenty of tea pots and glasses. At the heart of the medina you’ll also find the spice souk, where you can get fresh spices and essential oils, including argan oil. They’ll bag them up individually or you can ask for a specific mix, such as for chicken, for veg or a simple curry. They can also offer you their knowledge of the spices and oils for use with medical issues, such as upset stomachs, headaches or skin complaints.

Aside from the aforementioned seafood stalls down by the seafront, you will find plenty to eat and drink both in the medina, and along the beach. Within the medina are plenty of quirky cafes, serving coffee and pastries, freshly squeezed juices and smoothies. There are also restaurants offering fresh seafood, chicken brochette and a range of aromatic tagines. For a little bit of nightlife, the Taros bar is on a rooftop and offers plenty of Moroccan favourites and cocktails, as well as live music. And don’t worry if it’s a little cool, they have a range of thick woven ponchos to keep you warm. Along the beach a while you’ll also find a few restaurants and bars, with Ocean Vagabond being the hip place for those into the surf scene to hang out. Great food and plenty of outdoor seating ensures it’s busy throughout the day.

Villa Maroc is one of the most popular hotels in Essaouira, the first riad hotel and was originally built to house the multitude of surfers that descended upon the city. Nowadays it’s not lost that laidback vibe, but has smartened itself up and its roof terrace is always popular. Another popular spot is the Sofitel Thalassa Mogador, which is an ideal spot if you happen to be travelling as a family. It has a big pool, sits just across the road from a private beach and has plenty of food options to keep the whole family happy. For something a little grander, you can’t beat the La Maison Des Artistes. Elegant and sophisticated, there’s a library, bar and billiard room, as well as a rooftop pool and leafy courtyard. The restaurant serves wonderful Moroccan cuisine, and the hammam is on hand to scrub and soothe after a busy day.
