Flying 90 tons of gear to an Arctic eco-camp

A luxury eco-tourism operator tasked us with arranging the delivery of 90 tons of supplies, including tents, semi-permanent shelters and food, from South Africa to their camp in Antarctica. With no scheduled services operating to the remote destination, an aircraft charter was the only way of flying the heavy load to Antarctica’s only privately operated jet runway, a 3,000-metre-long blue ice airfield. We set about planning a specialist solution for this complex request.

Our Solution

Routes: Cape Town > Queen Maud Land

Aircraft: Airbus A340-600

Our cargo charter specialists sourced a converted four-engine freighter with a large lower deck that could easily be offloaded on the ice after touching down in Antarctica.

Working with the client and airline, we secured the necessary permits and arranged special training to prepare the crew for landing on the remote Arctic runway.

Our meticulous planning paid off and the charter ran smoothly from start to finish, with the A340-600 making history as the largest civilian aircraft to touch down in Antarctica!

The Finer Details
