Valletta, the Maltese capital, has been crowned the European Capital of Culture for 2018 – and with sites like St. John’s Cathedral, a stunning example of Baroque architecture, and City Gate, built in 2011 by Italian architect Renzo Piano, it certainly lives up to its name. While here, visitors can explore rural hiking paths and go scuba diving in the Blue Hole, a stunning natural rock formation carved out by wind and waves. Ggantija is the island’s most famous attraction, with its impressive limestone tombs and Neolithic temple ruins dating back to 3,600 BC.
