CITY GUIDE MARTHA’S VINEYARD

Private jet charter to Martha’s Vineyard

Located south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts, this charming island is prized for its seaside towns, fresh seafood and pristine beaches. Get a fast quote from Air Charter Service to charter a private jet to Martha’s Vineyard.

Simply known as ‘The Vineyard’ to locals, this small 20-mile-long island sure packs a punch. Spielberg’s 1974 film Jaws showcased its natural beauty and frequent visits by American presidents from Kennedy to Obama have cemented its status as a luxury holiday playground.

Geographically, Martha’s Vineyard is divided into Up Island (south and east) and Down Island (north and west). Most visitors head straight for Down Island – Vineyard Haven is the island’s vibrant main port, with plenty of car hire companies and excursion outlets. The tourist-friendly Oak Bluffs has a similar feel to England’s south coast and is pretty as a picture, with gingerbread cottages and village greens. This part of the island also boasts a couple of more unusual attractions – the open-air Trinity Park Tabernacle takes centre stage at Oak Bluffs Campground; while America’s oldest platform carousel, the Flying Horses Carousel, is a National Historic Landmark.

A long stretch of golden beach runs from Oak Bluffs to Edgartown, where much of Jaws was filmed. Cobbled laneways, boutique shops, white picket fences and 18th-Century whaling captains’ houses are signatures of this historic town, which has a great choice of charming inns and luxury private rentals.

Up Island is quieter but full of scenic pastures, rolling hills and low-key beaches. Aquinnah is a Wampanoag Indian settlement where you’ll find the famous red-and-silver clay cliffs, another National Historic Landmark. Chilmark is home to a couple of lovely private beaches, which you’ll only have access to if you’re staying in the area, such as Lucy Vincent Beach (where swimwear is optional) with its clear views of the clay cliffs. The islet of Chappaquiddick – or ‘Chappy’ – is a two-minute ferry ride from the main island and has a far more rugged vibe. Much of the islet is dedicated to conservation and the Cape Pogue Wildlife Refuge is a migration stop for thousands of birds.

For drinks and dining, Martha’s Vineyard has some top coffee shops, ice-cream parlours, seafood shacks and fine-dining fish houses. Sampling the famous lobster rolls is a must. It’s worth noting that most of the towns are dry, though you are welcome to bring your own bottle to restaurants. To get around, taxis and rental cars are plentiful but many visitors prefer to explore the island by bicycle.

Martha’s Vineyard can only be reached by boat or plane. Direct flights on commercial airlines are only offered from a handful of airports in the USA, so a private jet charter ensures an exclusive and hassle-free experience from the moment you depart your chosen destination. Air Charter Service can help you charter flights to Martha’s Vineyard from any destination of choice - we have offices around the world, so contact our team and we’ll arrange everything for you.
