Sitting in the Gulf of Thailand, off Cambodia’s coast is the country’s second largest island. Like many Southeast Asian paradise isles, Koh Rong was once a sleepy spot covered in jungle and1 scattered with a number of traditional fishing villages. Today, it’s become a favourite with the backpacker crowd who tend to spend time down on the lively south coast where the parties go on until the early hours. The heart of the action, throughout the day and well into the night, is the resort town of Koh Touch. It’s the point of arrival for those travelling from the mainland by ferry, and there’s not far to go from the pier to the restaurants, bars and nightclubs that line the sand. The accommodation here is basic – think thatched beach bungalows that won’t set you back much at all – and the atmosphere can be electric. This is the most developed town on the island but it’s not without those breathtaking tropical backdrops. For a bit of a quieter spot, but one that’s still in walking distance of all the fun, head a little further along Koh Touch beach where the development is a bit sparser and the sands a little less busy.
With lots of international visitors heading to these shores, there’s plenty to keep you entertained. You can head out on diving and snorkelling trips to the best underwater sports around Koh Rong (which is also a great way to see some of the rest of the island), or stay above the water on a traditional long boat or a less authentic jet ski, kayak or stand-up paddleboard. On dry land, there’s a canopy adventure park with ziplines, rope bridges and tightropes.
There are a few resorts scattered around the island’s coast, each making the most of the breathtaking sea views and jungle surroundings. One of the largest of these is located on a beautiful stretch of sand on the west coast. Sok San Beach Resort was first built to house the cast and crew of the television programme, Survivor, and now it is the largest hotel on the island. The beach is kept wonderfully clean and the water is crystal clear.
Up on the north coast is Lonely Beach, which is considered to be the finest in Koh Rong. It’s not as accessible as those beaches along the south and west coasts but that gives it an enviable desert island vibe. If you’re willing to spend a few nights in simple beach bungalows without any creature comforts, a few days up here away from the crowds is well worth the effort. At the other end of the accommodation scale is the five-star Song Saa Private Island which is set just off the east coast and has a selection of overwater and on-island villas that have their own infinity edge pools.
Just to the south of Koh Rong is the sister island of Koh Rong Sanloem which is much more low key than its neighbour. If you want to experience the same fantastic beaches and relaxed island life but want to get off the grid, this is a brilliant alternative. The places you stay are rustic, the Wi-Fi and electricity can be sporadic and there are no all-night parties. Saracen Bay is the most populated place on Sanloem and where the ferry from the mainland arrives. Over the last few years it has become more developed and the beach is lined by resorts, hotels and hostels and a few shops; it has a buzzing atmosphere but the focus is on those lazy days on the talcum-white sands.
Over on the west coast of Koh Rong Sanloem you’ll discover Lazy Beach. National Geographic has added this jaw-dropping stretch of sand to their ‘21 best beaches in the world’ list and for good reason: it’s secluded, bookended by jungle-covered hills and is backed by few thatched bungalows and towering palms. Part of the adventure is just reaching it – you’ll need to follow a hiking trail which takes about 40 minutes, or take a private taxi boat ride here from Saracen Bay – but this really adds to the charming off-the-beaten track feel. We recommend a few nights here reconnecting with nature (there’s no WiFi) and watching an epic sunset or two.
