Some places are just made for golfers, with luxury resorts, fine-dining restaurants, exclusive clubhouses and several courses. While there are plenty of great golf courses in the USA that cater to an A-list crowd, only a few destinations have more than one world-class course.
These are the top destinations to visit on a golf course tour of the USA via luxury private jet charter.
Kohler, Wisconsin
Kohler in Wisconsin is home to some of the best golfing experiences in the country. There are four excellent golf courses in the area, all designed by Pete Dye, at Blackwolf Run and Whistling Straits.
Offering two world-class golf courses — the Straits and the Irish — Whistling Straits is one of the most famous golfing destinations in the world. The 36-hole links-style golf course has hosted a number of big tournaments, including the 2004, 2010 and 2015 PGA Championships, the 2007 US Senior Open, and the 2020 Ryder Cup. The Straits Course is located along two miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and is challenging, rugged and windswept. The Irish Course is located a little more inland and is slightly more protected, but interspersed with several streams and other natural elements; it’s still a real challenge.
Accommodation: There’s a range of accommodation for those playing at Whistling Straits, and the most prestigious is The American Club Resort Hotel. This iconic hotel has been around for over 100 years and is known for its elegant rooms, high standards of service and storybook charm.
Dining: The top restaurant for golfers is the one designed specifically for the golf course. The Whistling Straits Restaurant has a rustic Irish farmhouse aesthetic and gorgeous views over Lake Michigan. The menu features modern, innovative versions of classic British-influenced cuisine; think racks of lamb and sticky toffee pudding. There’s also The Irish Pub upstairs, where you’ll find first-class fish ‘n’ chips along with fine Scotch and premium beers.
Airport: Fly by private charter to Sheboygan County Memorial Airport, which is a 20-minute drive from the Whistling Straits.
Colorado Springs, Colorado
The city of Colorado Springs, sitting 75 miles south of Denver, has quietly become one of the country’s top golfing destinations. There are several excellent golf courses in Colorado Springs, including Valley Hi Golf Course, Patty Jewett Golf Course, Pine Creek Golf Club, King’s Deer Golf Club, Shining Mountain Golf Club, and the crown jewel of the area, The Broadmoor Resort.
With grounds of over 5,000 acres, The Broadmoor has three golf courses; the East Course is the property’s most famous and has hosted the US Women and Senior Open championships throughout the years. This timeless mountain course has nine Donald Ross-designed holes and nine Robert Trent Jones-designed holes that were added 30 years later. Built up against the Cheyenne Mountain, the biggest challenge comes in the optical illusions created by the famed green contours.
Accommodation: There are many luxury hotels in Colorado Springs, but nothing beats staying at The Broadmoor itself. This luxury hotel dates back to 1959, and guests can choose between rooms, suites, cottages and houses. Think grand elegance with an old-school charm. Guests can also enjoy fly fishing, horse riding, shopping and tennis.
Dining: The Broadmoor has created an extravagant selection of dining options with a focus on local and seasonal produce. Six different restaurants on the property range from a high-end Italian eatery on a lake’s edge to an English-style pub and a steakhouse grill looking out over a golf course.
Airport: Fly by private charter to Colorado Springs Airport.
Palm Springs, California
Averaging over 350 days of sunshine every year, Palm Springs' weather is predictably warm, dry and sunny. This makes it one of the most popular golfing destinations during the winter. Of course, there are also the hot springs, stunning landscapes and luxury spas. The renowned music festival Coachella takes place here, too. Some of the best courses in Palm Springs include the PGA West (which has a number of courses), the Classic Club, the Desert Willow Golf Resort: Firecliff Course, SilverRock Resort, and more.
Our choice of luxury golf course in the area is the Indian Wells Golf Resort, with its impressive 53,000-square-foot clubhouse. The resort has two courses, The Celebrity Course and the Players Course, both of which are ranked in the Top 25 “Best Municipal Courses in the United States” by Golfweek Magazine. The Celebrity Course is a good choice for its undulating fairways, picturesque ponds and meandering streams that often feature waterfalls. It’s a tough course, but it’s definitely fun, with plenty of unusual and interesting holes on the back nine.
Accommodation: The Indian Wells Golf Resort is within walking distance of four luxury hotels: Tommy Bahama Miramonte Resort & Spa, Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa, Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa, and Indian Wells Resort Hotel. While all of these are fantastic luxury hotels, we’d recommend the Hyatt Regency.
Located on 45 acres of beautiful, lush gardens, the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa has fantastic villas of various sizes within the Indian Wells community with large bedrooms, living rooms and private backyards. There’s a world-class spa, a water park that includes a lazy river, a splash pad and duelling water slides, and a host of outdoor recreation activities.
Dining: Palm Springs is brimming with fine dining and world-class restaurant options. Golfers can enjoy simple, elegant food at The VUE, the signature course restaurant at Indian Wells Golf Resort, or one of the four dining options at the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa. We’d also recommend checking out 4 Saints, a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant on the seventh floor of the Rowan Restaurant. It has incredible views of the San Jacinto Mountains, and Chef Ysaac Ramirez is known for using fresh, seasonal ingredients to create shareable menus that you’re bound to come back for time and again.
Airport: Fly to Palm Springs International Airport, which is a 30-minute drive from the Indian Wells Golf Resort.
Big Island, Hawaii
Known as the “Golf Capital of Hawaii,” Big Island has just about everything you’d want from an exceptional golf destination. As the largest of the Hawaiian Islands, it has different microclimates depending on where you play that affect the type of course you’re on. There are world-class resorts and restaurants, black sand and golden beaches, lush tropical forests, and endless recreational activities on offer. There are around 15 courses on the island, with the Mauna Kea Golf Course topping the list. Designed by the renowned Robert Trent Jones Sr, it has some of the most scenic holes on the island. The best of these is a breathtaking par-3 that plays over a section of the opalescent Pacific Ocean.
Accommodation: We recommend staying at the Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection. This iconic resort was a favourite of Elvis Presley in the 70s and has remained popular since. On entry, guests are taken through an impressive open-air lobby displaying local art and sculptures. There’s also a pool complex, a range of restaurants, a beach bar, a private event suite, a spa, a range of rooms, and, importantly, two of the top golf courses on the island: The North Course and the South Course.
Dining: Big Island has plenty of high-end restaurants to choose from. Handily, one of the best is located at the Mauna Lani hotel. CanoeHouse is Mauni Lani’s signature restaurant, serving up exceptionally fresh seafood and farm-to-table produce. Guests can expect a beachfront setting, an extensive wine and cocktail list, and dishes with Hawaiian flare and Japanese influences.
Airport: Fly by private jet charter to Kona International Airport, which is 25 minutes from the resort.
Las Vegas, Nevada
Most famous for its bustling nightlife, exceptional casinos and vibrant entertainment options, Las Vegas is also home to a surprisingly large number of golf courses, considering its location in the Mojave Desert. Over 50 golf courses are within a 15-mile radius of Las Vegas, but if you only play at one, make it Shadow Creek. Designed by Tom Fazio with a reported $47 million construction budget, you’ll play on a course replete with rolling hills, canyons, creeks and lakes. To play, you must be a guest at one of the MGM Resorts International destinations, from where you’ll be collected by limousine, driven to the course for your time slot, and met by a hand-picked, experienced caddie, ready for your round. Guests without an invite can only play from Monday to Thursday.
Accommodation: Las Vegas is renowned for its luxurious hotels. You can stay at any of the famous MGM Resorts International destinations in Las Vegas if you have your sights set on playing at Shadow Creek, but our pick is the Bellagio. With breathtaking architecture, world-class dining options and the famous Bellagio Fountains, it’s an iconic Las Vegas stay synonymous with luxury and elegance. Rooms and suites have views of either the Vegas Strip or the eight-acre Bellagio Lake, and there’s a wealth of dining options to choose from. Indulge in a spa treatment, rent a private cabana next to one of the five swimming pools, or step outside right into the Strip’s best entertainment options.
Dining: There’s no shortage of fine dining in Las Vegas. Mizumi is one of our favourites. Overlooking a Japanese garden and koi pond, the interior is all lacquer finishes and polished wood. There’s even a floating pagoda table outside, right next to a gorgeous waterfall. The food here is globally renowned. With Japanese-inspired fare, expect the very best sushi and sashimi in Vegas.
Airport: Fly by private charter to McCarran Las Vegas Airport (now officially Harry Reid International Airport), which is a 13-minute drive from the Bellagio.
