About the US Masters
In 1932, golfing superstar Bobby Jones designed the Augusta National Golf Course with the help of banker Clifford Roberts and architect Alister MacKenzie. It opened to the public the following year and hosted the first Augusta National Invitation Tournament – or, as it’s colloquially known, the Masters – in 1934. Nearly a century later, the Masters is one of the world’s most renowned golfing championships and boasts a $10 million prize purse.
Qualifying competitors have to meet one of 18 criteria, such as being a former Masters winner, a victor of the last five US and British Opens, or a PGA champion. The Masters Committee can also invite international golfers who meet none of the qualifying criteria but are felt to be deserving competitors.
