About Venice Carnival
Venice Carnival, or Carnivale di Venezia, is famous for its elaborate masks and decadent dresswear. Thought to date all the way back to 1162, the festival grew in the 1800s until mask-wearing was banned by the conquering French. The Italian government revived the ancient tradition in 1979 to help restore the city’s cultural heritage, and today over three million visitors descend on the Floating City every year to take part in the festivities.
Lasting for around two weeks in the lead-up to Shrove Tuesday, carnival celebrations centre around St Mark’s Square and the city’s historic shipyard. Revellers show off their flamboyant costumes at a series of pageants, concerts, parades and masked balls.
