CITY GUIDE CALVI

Private jet charter and flights to Calvi

Calvi is a beautiful upmarket town in Corsica’s north-west corner where an imposing citadel overlooks a maze of Medieval streets. This is everything you would have wished a Mediterranean town would be. In the summer, the marina is filled with bright-white yachts, the streets are buzzing with tourists and the three-mile crescent-shaped beach is full of sun-seekers. Get a fast qoute with Air Charter Service and charter a private jet today.

You can’t miss the imposing Citadel, a centuries-old Genoese fortress that dominates the skyline of this coastal town. It towers over the streets and the glittering waters of the Mediterranean below and has protected the town and island from attacks from the sea on numerous occasions throughout its long and interesting history. The views from up here are incredible and western-most of the citadel’s five bastions is the place to be at sunset. You can watch the changing colours of the sky, sea and terracotta roofs.

Within the fortification, you’ll find the supposed birthplace of Christopher Columbus – the locals believe that the legendary explore was born in Calvi rather than in the Italian city of Genoa – and the Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Calvi, a surprisingly simple Catholic church that’s the perfect place for some peace and to reflect. As you climb the cobbled stairs and circumnavigate the citadel’s walls, soak up the faded charm and appreciate what has gone before you. It was during his successful besiegement of the citadel that Admiral Nelson – who would go on to be one of Britain's most famous historic figures – lost the sight in his right eye.

Back down at sea level is the main part of town that backs a small but busy marina. As you’d expect from a spot popular with international visitors, there are plenty of shops selling souvenirs as well as upmarket restaurants and charming local grocery stores where the produce spills out onto the street. There are also squares lined by cafés where most of the dining is done al fresco and delightful churches with faded pastel exteriors and cool and calm marble and cedarwood interiors.

On those hot, blue-sky summer days, most people flock to the town’s sandy beach which stretches for over three miles. It’s backed by bars and eateries and there are plenty of sun loungers you can use if you pay a fee or order some drinks and/or food. From June to September or even October, the clear and gently deepening water is wonderfully warm but refreshing and you can swim with the imposing citadel as a backdrop.

For views out over the entire town, the beach and the citadel, head westwards out of Calvi and climb up to the 19th-Century Chapelle de Notre Dame de la Serra. This small church on the peak of a rocky outcrop is only open for services but the hike up here is more than worth it for the panoramic vistas. And it’s another great place to watch the sunset.

Just along the coast from Calvi is the breathtaking Scandola Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is only easily accessible by boat. Rugged ochre-coloured rocks rise up dramatically out of the crystal clear and usually calm waters and sea birds and the iconic bearded vultures fly overhead. There’s also the chance to see dolphins play in the sea and seals lounge on the rocks.

Calvi – Sainte-Catherine Airport, which is located only four and a half miles from the heart of the town, is one of Corsica’s four main airfields. Simply contact one of our team and we will arrange everything you need to charter a private jet to Calvi.
