History of Oktoberfest, Munich

The first ever Oktoberfest was held in October 1810 to celebrate Prince Ludwig of Bavaria's marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The festival was such a success that the tradition has been repeated each year ever since, now starting in September to take advantage of the milder nights. Referred to as die Wiesn by locals, the festival takes place in Theresienwiese, an area named after Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen herself.

Ask anyone why they want to go to Oktoberfest and the obvious answer is the beer. In true Bavarian tradition, only beer produced by traditional Munich breweries will be served on site, adhering to strict, long-standing brewing traditions to produce the purest beer with the very best taste. The six traditional Munich breweries at Oktoberfest 2017 are Augustiner, Hacker Pschorr, Hofbräu, Löwenbräu, Paulaner and Spaten. The oldest being Augustiner, founded in 1328, closely followed by Spaten in 1397.

There are 14 beer tents to choose, each with its own unique charm and advantages. Key dates for Oktoberfest 2017 are the Oktoberfest Costume and Riflemen’s Parade which happens every year on the first Sunday, the Parade of Oktoberfest Landlords and Breweries, the Official Tapping of the Keg and Böllerschießen, a handheld canon salute in front of the Bavaria statue.

Oktoberfest for business

Whilst it’s perhaps not the most traditional business trip, a day or two at Oktoberfest is a fun way to win new business and entertain clients. It may come as a surprise, but doing business at Oktoberfest is nothing new, with many of the tables already being reserved by large German corporations. Many major contracts have been sealed over one-litre beer mugs and oxen roasted on a spit! If you’ve recently experienced company growth, won new business or achieved high targets, a team trip to Oktoberfest 2017 is a great way to reward high level executives and directors.

The way to start is to make a reservation in one of the tents, usually there are lunch, afternoon and evening timeslots for each. Käfer's Wies’n-Schänke or Kafer’s Tent, known as the gourmet tent, serves delicacies such as fillet of venison, foie gras and crispy duck from chef Andreas Schinharl. During the day this is a sophisticated, family friendly tent but at night the tent transforms into a playground for the rich and famous, with wine and champagne served in addition to beer. Footballers from FC Bayern Munich and Germany's big names such as Lothar Matthäus, Ralph Siegel and former Miss Germany, Verona Pooth are seated here. This exclusive tent seats only 1000 inside and 1,900 outside so it’s important to reserve in advance. You can make a reservation for Käfer's Wies’n-Schänke on the Oktoberfest site.

Another popular choice is the Ochsenbraterei or Oxen Tent, a larger tent which seats up to 5,900 people. If you want to know what the main draw of this tent is, the clue is in the name, with over 109 oxen spit-roasted in 2016. You can make a reservation for the Ochsenbraterei and view ticket prices on the official site. Another highlight is a trip to the Happy Hippo Champagne Bar in the Hippodrome tent.

Aside from a table reservation in one of the top tents, there are other routes you can take to impress clients at Oktoberfest and ensure they have a great time; contact the travel and concierge team at ACS to make arrangements. Independent travel companies including Authent Escapes, Rocket Hospitality and VIP-Hospitality also offer hospitality packages and trip itineraries. Avoid the boozy crowds on commercial flights during the festival and impress your clients with charter flights to Munich.
