About the Espy Awards
Every year, the sporting world gathers in the United States for the ESPYs (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards). Attended by big names like LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Tom Brady and Steph Curry, the event sees superstar athletes and retired legends cheer each other on whilst celebrating the biggest moments of the past 12 months.
The main awards include Best Game, Best NBA Player, Best WNBA Player, Best Male Athlete and Best Female Athlete. Several specialty prizes are also handed out, including the Capital One Cup, given to the best Division I athletics men’s and women’s programs, and the Arthur Ashe Courage Award, named after the only African-American male tennis player to win Wimbledon and the U.S. and Australian Opens.
The final, and most emotional, award of the evening is the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance for an athlete overcoming obstacles. It’s given in honour of late college basketball coach Jimmy Valvano, who passed away from cancer shortly after winning the Arthur Ashe Courage Award in 1993.
