Founded in 1987, Dreamflight is a charity aimed at improving the lives of young people suffering with serious illness or disability. They take 192 children, chosen from thousands of nominations, on a holiday of a lifetime to Orlando, Florida. Air Charter Service have been working with Dreamflight for a number of years now, raising money through sponsored events to help fund this annual trip.
The journey starts at London Heathrow airport, where the children bid farewell to their parents and board a Boeing 747 to Orlando along with a crew of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and enthusiastic volunteers. For the first leg of the journey there is one escort per two children, but on arrival in Florida a whole host of new volunteers also join the group. There are also night-nurses on hand to look after the children throughout the night. They then receive a police escort to the hotel, ensuring they feel like true VIPs before spending the remainder of their holiday visiting all the theme parks and other attractions in the area. For many of the children this is their first experience away from home, able to mingle with other children similar to themselves and grow in confidence.
Dreamflight is funded by a mix of corporate sponsorship and donations, and each year the cost of putting on this holiday of a lifetime are approximately £750,000, so roughly £3,500 per child. Dreamflight itself only employs five people, the rest are volunteers, many from the medical profession, who give up their spare time to ensure these dream flights can take place.
The next Dreamflight holiday takes place from 17-27th October 2015. Please visit the Dreamflight website to learn more about their good work.
