Renowned for its contrasting landscapes, Moremi Game Reserve is characterised by swathes of dry land rising up between vast wetlands, creating a striking patchwork of woodland, savannah, floodplains, marsh, lagoons and islands.
This wildlife-rich region is home to an unbeatable selection of flora and fauna. A thriving population of recently introduced rhinos joins lions, leopards, buffaloes and elephants to complete the Big Five, while Moremi’s other big game include wildebeests, zebras, spotted hyenas and giraffes. The reserve also conserves over 400 bird species and a large population of the endangered African wild dog.
The reserve’s most popular islands are Chief’s Island and the Mopane Tongue. Chief’s Island’s meandering waterways, lagoons, grassplains and forests shelter a rich concentration of wildlife during the summer months, when animals flock inland as the Okavango Delta’s water levels rise. This extraordinary setting is renowned for thrilling game-viewing, from spotting hippos, crocodiles and elephants on mekoro safaris to embarking on action-packed 4x4 drives through the bush.
The Mopane Tongue, meanwhile, is the only area in Moremi that’s accessible to mobile and self-drive safaris. A dry triangle jutting between the Khwai and Mogogelo Rivers, this sprawling peninsula is cloaked by mopane forest. Its best wildlife viewing spots are Khwai River, where soaring evergreen trees fringe a vast floodplain, and Xakanaxa Lagoon, which teems with game and diverse birdlife.
Moremi is dotted with some of Africa’s most exclusive safari lodges and camps, where guests can experience the rugged beauty of the bush in total luxury. Boasting stylish tented suites – often with their own private plunge pools and viewing decks – and exceptional experiences such as hot-air balloon rides over the bush, gourmet bush picnics and alfresco spa treatments, these intimate retreats provide a relaxing base from which to reconnect with nature. Favourites include Sanctuary Chief’s Camp, Mombo Camp and Belmond Khwai River Lodge.
