CITY GUIDE GENEVA

Private jet charter and flights to Geneva

A stunning lakeside city surrounded by the snow-capped Alps, Geneva is famed for the quaint cafés, luxury boutiques and fabled monuments that line its cobblestone streets. Experience it all: request a private jet charter quote from Air Charter Service.

The best time to visit is during the warm summer months from June to August. Take a cooling dip in Lake Geneva at Bains des Pâquis, a trendy swimming spot with waterfront bar and restaurant, or board a champagne brunch cruise for a close-up of the world’s tallest fountain and some of the glamorous mansions lining the lakeshore. On warm evenings, head to beautiful Parc de la Perle du Lac, where CinéTransat screens classic movies under the stars.

In Geneva’s charming Old Town, visit the house where 18th-century philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau was born and explore Cathédrale de St Pierre, an imposing Romanesque-Gothic landmark where protestant reformer John Calvin preached in the 1500s. Climb the cathedral’s long spiral staircase for breathtaking 360° city and lake views. Built into the old city walls to mark Calvin’s 400th birthday, the 330ft-long Reformation Wall is a magnificent monument depicting prominent Protestant leaders such as Oliver Cromwell and John Knox.

Uncover the art of Swiss watchmaking at the stylish Patek Philippe Museum, run by one of the country’s leading luxury watch brands, which showcases elaborate timepieces dating back as far as the 16th century. Then head to the lakeside Jardin Anglais to see Horloge Fleurie, a huge ‘flower clock’ which was crafted from 6,500 plants in 1955 as a symbol of the city's watchmakers.

Shopping here is an indulgent mix of elegant haute couture, luxury jewellers and tempting confectionary. Browse contemporary designer labels at Septième Étage, an exclusive boutique in the Old Town, and peruse classic Swiss timepieces over a glass of fizz in Les Ambassadeurs’ private showroom. For a handmade sweet treat head to the family-run Chocolatier Auer, one of the city’s oldest chocolate shops.

Geneva’s exciting culinary scene ranges from swanky hotel restaurants to charming little street-side cafés. For inventive French cuisine, head to Michelin-starred Vertig’O at Hotel de la Paix or the spectacular roof terrace at U Bobba on the hip Rue de la Coratterie. Tuck into hearty Swiss cheese fondue at cosy Café du Soleil or on the shaded terrace of upmarket Restaurant Les Armures. Run by the Geneva Hotel School, Restaurant Vieux Bois serves exceptional world-fusion cuisine and traditional dishes prepared by talented trainee chefs.

Several luxury brands feature sleek five-star hotels in Geneva. Mandarin Oriental’s elegant art-deco offering is beautifully located on the River Rhône; Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues Geneva is a lavish palace-hotel with Michelin-starred restaurant; and the Dorchester Collection runs Le Richemond, a grande dame dating back to 1875. La Réserve Hotel and Spa Geneva is another popular choice, located in the city’s verdant outskirts with huge gardens and a fantastic spa.
