SPOTLIGHT ON GIBRALTAR AIRPORT

10 September 2015

Gibraltar is one of those places that most people have heard of, but few really know where it is or why to visit. Bordering Spain’s south west tip, Gibraltar is a UK overseas territory but benefits from better weather and tax breaks. It is also home to the Rock of Gibraltar, a monolithic limestone promontory.

Whilst Gibraltar is beautiful and it’s terrain, rugged, it is only 2.3 square miles and suffers from a lack of flat land, which makes building an airport and more importantly, a runway, a difficult task. Originally constructed during World War II, the runway has since been extended out into the Bay of Gibraltar using rock excavated from the Rock of Gibraltar and a road was then built through the airport intersecting the runway. This means that not only is Gibraltar Airport a challenge to land at due to the space constraints, but also that throughout the day the main road across the island is stopped for planes to land and take off.
