US Open History

The US Open started in 1881 as an exclusive men’s tournament for the US National Lawn and Tennis Association in Newport, Rhode Island. The Open era began in 1968 and was won by Arthur Ashe, the first African-American player to win a men’s singles title at a Grand Slam championship. In 1977, the president of the US Tennis Association (USTA) spotted the Flushing Meadows complex while flying into La Guardia Airport and refurbished it for the US Open, renaming the center after Billie Jean King, who won 39 Grand Slam titles in her tennis career.

Today, the US Open features men’s and women’s singles and doubles tournaments, as well as mixed doubles. In 2016, the prize money for winners of the singles reached $3.5 million. Matches are held on four main acrylic hard courts, including the newly-refurbished Arthur Ashe Stadium, which seats over 22,500 spectators and has a retractable roof. Plenty of celebrities attend the US Open and last year Leonardo DiCaprio, Hugh Jackman, Beyonce and Jay-Z, and Susan Sarandon were spotted in the stands.
