About the Festival

The New York Film Festival (NYFF) stretches back to 1963 and has since then been a major film event held annually in New York. The event is produced by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and features a selection of the best films from around the world from celebrated filmmakers as well as new talent.

Awards are presented to films in various categories, with a showcase of 28 feature films, a section devoted to immersive and interactive storytelling, a spotlight on documentary and short films, a section dedicated to re-discoveries and restorations, as well as short films. This year a new program will be included in the event, a selection of six adventurous and exploratory international feature films.

Also, for the first time in the festival’s history, the opening film will be a documentary – a piece by Ava DuVernay. The film chronicles the history of racial tension in the United States, according to a press release. Ava DuVernay will also be the first woman director to open the festival since 2004.
