Fly by Private Jet Charter to the Rio Carnival 2017

Every year Rio de Janeiro hosts the most spectacular Carnival celebrations in South America. Visitors flock to the Brazilian city, which is known as the ‘Carnival capital of the world’, for five days of glitzy costume parades, street parties, Samba music, dancing, and glamorous balls.

Portuguese settlers brought the catholic tradition of Carnaval, now known as Carnival, to Brazil in the 18th century. The event symbolises a euphoric farewell to bodily pleasures that must be given up for Lent and has become one of Brazil’s most important cultural events. Carnival falls just before Lent, during the peak of Rio’s summer, and ends on Shrove Tuesday. In 2017, the festival runs from Friday the 24th to Tuesday the 28th February.

Celebrations begin on Friday when the mayor crowns the Carnival King Momo and hands him the keys to the city. Then millions of people take to Rio’s streets, which are transformed into a euphoric whirl of party-goers dressed in colourful costumes dancing to the heavy beat of Samba, a music form that originated in Rio. Throughout the city and along Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, over 300 street bands perform at more than 500 open-air parties. The biggest party is held in Cinelândia Square, where popular singers and bands perform.

The Samba parades, which take place in the famous Sambódromo stadium, are the highlight of the entire Carnival. Every neighbourhood in Rio has its own Samba school and members spend months planning elaborate performances filled with sparkling costumes, dancing, floats, and music. This year the biggest parades take place on the 26th and 27th, when the top 12 groups will compete to be crowned the best Samba school. Luxury suite tickets to this magical affair cost between $938 and $1,182.

When you’re not partying in the streets and enjoying the Samba parades, there are dozens of carnival balls to attend. The most exclusive is the Copacabana Palace’s Magic Ball, a black tie event with live music, dancing, gourmet buffets, and open bars. The Magic Ball is an event attended by well known celebrities like Brigitte Bardot and Gerard Butler, as well as famous names from business and politics. This year’s ball takes place on the 25th February from 10pm and has a Geisha theme, tickets range from $977 to $1,490, buy yours here.
