About the DFB-Pokal
Germany’s first annual football cup began in 1935. Originally called the Tschammer-Pokal, it was suspended during World War II before returning in the early 1950s as the DFB-Pokal, named after organiser Deutscher Fussball-Bund (the German Football Association). Today the DFB-Pokal is one of Germany’s most important club titles, with 64 teams competing and the winner qualifying for the DFL-Supercup and UEFA Europa League.
The top 36 teams from the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga automatically qualify, along with the top four teams from the 3. Liga. The last 24 slots go to the best teams from regional football associations, with a mix of amateur and professional sides playing each other in knock-out rounds – often resulting in exciting ‘giant killings’ where a professional team is beaten by an amateur one. Even Bayern Munich, the tournament’s most successful team with 18 titles, has been knocked out three times by an amateur team in the first round.
